Why is Alumah needed?

Domestic violence is a largely hidden evil in UK society.  It has wide ranging negative impacts on the victims, those close to them, and on society as a whole.  In the UK, 1 in 3 women, 1 in 7 men and 1 in 5 from LGBTQ+ group will be abused by their partner at some point in their lifetime.  Victims include young people with, for example, 1 in 3 teens reporting that they are harassed by a partner (e.g. messaged up to 30 times an hour).

Violent and abusive relationships have devastating impacts for victims including suicide.  Adolescents experiencing domestic violence are at significantly higher risk of substance abuse, eating disorders, risky sexual behaviour and further domestic violence.  Being physically or sexually abused makes teen girls six times more likely to become pregnant and twice as likely to get a sexually transmitted infection.
